THE CITY OF 3MOONS

THE CITY OF THREE MOONS

Empathic doctor, Riley Griey thinks she’s been through hell, but then the war ended and things got worse.

3 moons coverIn 2548 The Council of Ruling Houses of Earth lost the Colonial War of Independence, an economic disaster as their off-world colonies represented major investments to the various mega-corporations that rule Earth. According to the treaty, however, Earth could sign new charters with any colony interested in continuing their economic relationship. This is the story of a diplomatic team sent to reestablish contact and open negotiations with a colony that had been “lost” during the long war.

The colony is on Eoshia, a planet that has two moons and occasionally a third. This third moon is actually a large asteroid moving in an elliptical orbit around the sun and then back around Eoshia every five hundred years or so. The life cycle of the native Eoshians is synchronized with the orbit of this 3rd moon. Their existence within a physical body is merely one phase, and the natives walk on the planet’s surface only when the third moon is in their sky. The planet itself is alive, and the consciousness of all native Eoshians is a trans-dimensional hive mentality known as Unity.

When the Pioneer Program made an initial survey of the planet, the native Eoshians were in their dormant stage. The human colonists were unaware that there even was a sentient population. They managed to survive during their time of isolation from Earth by adapting a lifestyle to fit the planet, dealing with things such as the climate, which was gradually growing warmer, and dangers such as a large nocturnal animal, called the lamia.

The City of Three Moons follows a team of six people from Earth including Dr. Riley Griey, an empathic doctor, and Colonel Mac McKenna, Earth Marine Forces, retired. Shortly after this team from Earth landed on the planet, a similar team arrived from the Proxima Empire, one of the larger and more aggressive of the newly liberated colonies. The Proxima are not particularly scrupulous competitors for the colony of Eoshia.

As the story unfolds, members of the team from Earth find they have to face personal issues left over from the war before they can achieve their goal. Riley discovers she can empathically hear the planet, and unless she can learn the language, it will eventually drive her mad. Mac McKenna is attracted to the empathic doctor. A xenolinquist before the war, he can help her, but he’s slowly dying. Then, to make matters worse, the entire human population finds itself in the middle of a battle for survival as the planet begins to wake up and its non-human inhabitants begin to emerge.

“Space opera at its best, with a delightful dash of romance to space things up!”
